Radiation Treatment

Radiation Oncology is the process of using focused, targeted radiation to kill cancer cells. Skyline Urology provides expert radiation treatment at its two Radiation Oncology Centers located in Tustin and Sherman Oaks. The experts at Skyline utilize a multi-disciplinary approach backed by advanced technology and research.

Radiation is delivered externally, sent directly into the body from an outside source.  More than 50% of all cancer patients benefit from radiation therapy.

For bladder cancer, radiation therapy may be used in combination with surgery or chemotherapy, or as part of a treatment regimen including all three modalities. It can be used before surgery to shrink the tumor, or after limited surgery to maintain the integrity of the surrounding tissue. It could be the main treatment for those with early stage bladder cancer. It might also be used in conjunction with chemotherapy to boost the effectiveness of the chemotherapy treatment.

Radiation therapy is usually painless, and treatments last only minutes. Radiation treatments are usually given on a daily basis, with the length of time determined by health, cancer stage, and other variables. Side effects of radiation are variable, depending on the site and the dose given. Some common side effects include skin irritation, nausea, burning urination, blood in urine, diarrhea, or fatigue.  These side effects are usually temporary, and Skyline’s experts will help you with comprehensive care to manage and treat these if they occur.

Your healthcare team at Skyline Urology will work seamlessly with Skyline Radiation Oncology experts to plan and coordinate the safest and most effective course of treatment for radiation therapy.
