Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie’s disease is a condition in which plaques form on the penis causing painful erections, curvature and distortion of the penis.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Hardened tissue in the penis
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Painful erections
  • Curved erections

These symptoms can develop slowly over time or may be rapid in onset.

  • Aging
  • Genetics/ family history
  • Connective tissue disorders such as Dupuytren's contracture
  • Injury to the penis
  • Diabetes
  • Tabaco Use

A physical examination by an experienced provider is usually sufficient to diagnose Peyronie's disease. X-rays or ultrasound pictures are not mandatory, but they can show when plaque calcification has occurred.

A wide variety of medications, surgery, and stretching devices have been used in the treatment of Peyronies disease. At times, some Peyronies plaques may resolve on their own. Other treatment options include:

  • Oral Medications such as Xiaflex, Vitamin E, Colchicine and Carnitine
  • Penile injections to place medications directly into the plaque to break it up

Bent Penile Implant Surgery - solid or inflatables that are surgically implanted into the penis to produce a functional erection. These are used less frequently however, still remain an excellent option.

Every patient is different and it is very important to have good communication with your provider to ensure the best treatment for you.
